July 22, 2010Along with myriads of new bands, Perth’s own Tame Impala have made a bible of the Nuggets and Pebbles compilations, the only difference is that while most of the other bands most of the time simply name-check those compilations and the magical music that was created in that very important time in rock and roll history, Tame Impala actually make the most of capturing the essence and spirit of their swingin’ predecessors by making it unique and modern.
First single ” Solitude is Bliss” feels like it was recorded by Aquaman after having ingested Ayahuasca in his underwater lair. Lyrics such as the chorus’ ”There’s a party in my head and no one is invited/ You will never come close to how I feel” confirm to the listener that there is no mistake, there is no half-way, this music is intended for and made by psychonauts.
But it’s not all trips and myths for Tame Impala, another excellent song off their debut album “Innerspeaker” released on Modular is “Why won’t you make up your mind?” is a beautiful love song; again filled with beautifully processed guitars, and oneiric landscapes played here in the Californian wilderness where hundreds of years before tribes and shamans also gave their odes to nature.
Tame Impala have just finished a North American tour with post-psych moguls MGMT, now let them enter your psyche for an intimate and interesting journey.
Le Stelle di Mario Schifano – Lysergic Italian Pop
January 29, 2010Mario Schifano, Italian pop artist in the 1960s was often compared to Andy Warhol, when Warhol drew the Campbell Soup Schifano drew the Esso logo, Warhol was involved in every aspect of art, just like Schifano. In 1967 both Warhol and Schifano started their adventure with music, Warhol with the Velvet Underground, Schifano with Le Stelle di Mario Schifano.
Le Stelle di Mario Schifano formed from various ashes of different Italian beat bands, such as New Dada’s bassist and the Wretched’s keyboard player.
All from different towns in Italy they first started playing in Rome, at the legendary Piper club, but were most successful in Turin, where they played many shows and recorded their debut and only album “Dedicato a..”.
The album consists of only 6 tracks dominated by strong feedback paired with sweet harmonies in a way similar to the Velvet Underground.
The track that i’m posting here is called “Molto Alto” (Very High) and is very lysergic in both words and sound.
Could it be only a coincidence that the acronym of their name without Mario Schifano’s name spells LSD?
